Pruning is a necessary tree maintenance procedure that enhances the health and safety of trees but is often misunderstood and done incorrectly. Clearance issues or buildings do sometimes require either the raising of the canopy or even the removal of parts of the canopy, and on occasion, a tree does require some height reduction. Usually this is the least desirable approach, however, and some correct thinning cuts could actually do the job better. The old practice of “topping” or “heading back” a tree is one of the worst forms of malpractice in the world of trees and once done, the tree’s health and structural soundness are permanently compromised.
